As she steps atop the hill, she oversees the vast expanse of the prairie in front of her. She surveys nothing approaching in any direction, yet she swears she heard a sound resembling that of a beating heart. This impossible thought puzzles her mind as a pulsing heart cannot be heard so audibly without the aid of technological devices. Her smooth forehead wrinkles with distraught above her deep peridot eyes, glistening as the sun begins its descent under the horizon. The temperature drops around her while a warm, comforting breeze blows through her curly hair. It flaps in the wind as the soft, rich chestnut sheen catches the lessening rays of sun and returns to its place just above her waist with its perfect arrangement still intact.
Again, the agony of thumping danced across the grasslands with an eerie calm. She cannot distinguish from where it originates, yet she feels it approaching with a dignified rushed. The pounding ricochets into her ears and chimes with an entrancing charisma; the breeze dies off to unnaturally motionless air. She starts to sway with the pattering until she realizes the chill the has crawled up her spine. With a jolt back into consciousness, she turns to her left to check for any clues as to who pursued her to this very spot. While nothing registers with her vibrant eyes, the heart beat definitely stands there with unquestionable presence.
Defeat engulfs her body as a swirling vortex of wind culminates on the hill with her as the focus. She is unable to escape from the overwhelming speeds of the wind, and it funnels tightly around her towards the heavens. Despite the harsh pressure of the rotating air, she remains slightly visible and anchored to her position like an emotionless statue in a neglected garden: her head tilted to over her left shoulder, with the adjacent arm delicately lifted, and her other arm loosely hanging by her side. Hope abandons her form with the wind's encasing hold. Above the deafening scream of the tornado, a croupy wheeze burdens to inhale a pocket of air by the steady beating heart. It coughed and gasped as the oxygen entered its essence with sharp pangs of relief.
It now had a breath.
